WELCOME TO RURAL RICHMOND HILL
ABOUT RURAL RICHMOND HILL
Rural Richmond Hill was first settled in the early 1800s mostly by pioneer families with German, Irish, English, or Scottish ancestry. Many of these families travelled here from Pennsylvania and Upstate New York. Most of these first land grants encompassed two hundred acre lots. In return for the land the settlers had to clear a patch of forest and build a homestead on their property. They also had to contribute to the building of roads in the community which was no small task.
The rural sector of Richmond Hill represents a very wide area stretching from north and east of the city. Large luxury homes in the northern area of Rural Richmond Hill sit on lot sizes of one to three acres.
Newer developments exist just north of Elgin Mills at Leslie Street offering townhouses and semi-detached houses. Otherwise, the area remains predominantly agricultural.
